How to Choose a Software Development Company: 12 Questions to Ask

12 questions to ask when hiring a software development company, covering experience, process, code ownership, security and price.

Choosing a software development partner is one of the most important decisions you will make for your product. The right team speeds you up for years; the wrong one costs months and money to undo. Whether you are a startup in the US, a scale-up in the UK, a business in the Middle East or a company in Pakistan, these twelve questions will help you compare agencies on what actually matters.

Experience and fit

1. Have you built something similar before?

Ask for case studies that match your type of product: SaaS, marketplace, mobile app, AI tool or internal platform. Live products you can click through are more convincing than screenshots. Ask what the team specifically built and what changed for the client as a result.

2. Which technologies do you recommend for my project, and why?

A good partner recommends a stack based on your needs, not just what they always use. Listen for clear reasoning about speed to market, scalability, hiring and long-term maintenance. (For a common example, see Ruby on Rails vs Node.js.)

3. Can I speak to a client you have worked with?

References and independent review platforms such as Clutch tell you how a company behaves when things get difficult, not just when they go well.

Process and communication

4. How do you run projects day to day?

Look for short iterations, regular demos of working software and a clear owner for timelines and communication. You should always know what was done this week and what is next.

5. How will we communicate, and when?

Agree on tools (Slack, Jira, email), meeting frequency and response times. If the team works in a different time zone, ask how much overlap you will have each day and how urgent issues are handled.

6. How do you handle changing requirements?

Requirements always change once real users get involved. The answer reveals whether you will be negotiating change requests or simply re-prioritising the next sprint. Our guide to dedicated teams vs fixed-price projects explains the trade-off.

Quality and security

7. How do you test the software?

Ask about manual and automated testing, who is responsible for QA, and whether testing happens every sprint or only at the end. Quality assurance that is bolted on at the end is expensive.

8. How do you protect our data and systems?

Ask about access control, how credentials and secrets are handled, code review, dependency updates and backups. If you work in a regulated industry, ask about their experience with your compliance requirements.

Ownership and the long term

9. Who owns the code and accounts?

You should own your source code, cloud accounts, domains and third-party services. Confirm this in writing before work starts.

10. What happens after launch?

Products need monitoring, bug fixes, security patches and new features. Ask how support works, how quickly issues are fixed and whether the same team stays involved.

11. How easy is it to change teams later?

Clear documentation, standard tools and clean code protect you. A partner who is confident in their work is happy to make handover easy.

Price and value

12. What exactly is included in the price?

Compare like for like: number of engineers and their experience, QA, design, project management, DevOps and support. A cheaper quote that excludes testing or project supervision often costs more in the end. Transparent monthly team pricing makes comparisons easier; for reference, you can see how our team plans break down.

Red flags to watch for

  • No live work you can verify, or vague answers about who did what.
  • A fixed price given without understanding your scope.
  • Reluctance to give you ownership of code and accounts.
  • No dedicated QA or project supervision.
  • Communication that is slow before you have even signed.

A quick scorecard

Score each shortlisted company from 1 to 5 on: relevant experience, technical reasoning, references, process, communication, quality assurance, security, ownership, support and transparency of pricing. The highest total is usually your best partner, not the lowest price.
