Dedicated Development Team vs Fixed-Price Project: Which Model Fits You?

Dedicated remote team or fixed-price contract? Compare cost, flexibility, risk and control to choose the right software outsourcing model.

When you work with a software development company, you will usually choose between two engagement models: a fixed-price project or a dedicated team billed monthly. The model you pick affects your budget, your flexibility and how much control you have over the product. Here is how to decide.

Fixed-price projects

You agree on a detailed scope up front, the vendor quotes a total price, and they deliver that scope.

Works well when:

  • The scope is small, clear and unlikely to change (a landing page, a well-defined integration, a one-off feature).
  • You need a single number for budget approval.
  • There is a clear finish line and little ongoing work after launch.

Watch out for:

  • Change requests. Anything outside the original scope is extra, and new ideas during the build are normal.
  • Padding. Vendors price in risk, so you may pay a premium for uncertainty.
  • Misaligned incentives. The vendor's goal is to finish the agreed scope, not necessarily to build the best product.

Dedicated teams

You get engineers (and often QA, design and project supervision) who work on your product full time, billed monthly. You set priorities; the team delivers in short cycles.

Works well when:

  • You are building a product that will keep evolving after launch, like a SaaS platform, marketplace or app.
  • You want to learn from users and change direction without renegotiating contracts.
  • You need ongoing development, maintenance and support.

Watch out for:

  • You need product direction. A team is most effective with clear priorities from you or a product owner.
  • Budget is time-based. Cost is predictable per month, so the total depends on how long you keep the team.

Side-by-side comparison

Fixed-price project Dedicated team
Best for Small, well-defined, one-off scope Evolving products and long-term work
Budget One total price Predictable monthly cost
Flexibility Low: changes are re-quoted High: re-prioritise every cycle
Your control Scope agreed up front You steer priorities continuously
Risk Scope and change-request disputes Needs clear product ownership

What a dedicated team actually includes

A good dedicated team is more than developers. For example, our own remote team plans are built around complete delivery, not just coding hours:

  • Basic Remote Team ($3,500/month): one dedicated engineer, part-time QA and project supervision.
  • Elite Remote Team ($8,000/month): two dedicated engineers, part-time QA and UI/UX, and more supervision.
  • Enterprise Remote Team ($13,000/month): three dedicated engineers including a senior engineer, QA, UI/UX, DevOps and project supervision.

Every plan includes a QA engineer and a project supervisor, so quality and communication are covered from day one.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. Will the scope change once real users see it? If yes, choose a dedicated team.
  2. Is there ongoing work after launch? Products need updates, fixes and new features; teams handle this naturally.
  3. Do you have someone to set priorities? A dedicated team works best with a clear product owner.
  4. Is budget approval based on a total or a monthly figure? Both can work; be honest about which your organisation needs.

Our recommendation

For most startups and growing businesses building a real product, a dedicated team gives the best balance of speed, quality and control: you pay a predictable monthly amount, keep full visibility and can scale the team as you grow. For a small, tightly defined piece of work, ask for a custom quotation instead.
