WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and Next.js has become the go-to framework for fast, modern websites. Both can produce an excellent business site. The right choice depends on who edits the site, how much speed and SEO matter, and what else the website needs to do.

The short version

  • WordPress is great when non-technical staff publish lots of content daily and you want thousands of ready-made plugins and themes.
  • Next.js is great when speed, SEO, security and custom features matter, and when the website is part of a larger product such as a SaaS app or customer portal.

Speed

Next.js can prerender pages to static HTML at build time, so visitors receive a finished page immediately from a global CDN. That makes it very fast by default and helps Core Web Vitals, which Google uses as a ranking signal.

WordPress builds pages on the server for each request, typically with a database query. It can be fast with good hosting and caching, but heavy themes and many plugins often slow it down.

SEO

Both can rank well. Next.js gives developers precise control over metadata, structured data, sitemaps and rendering, and static pages are fully readable by every crawler. WordPress offers SEO plugins that make basics easy for editors. The bigger SEO risk is a client-side-rendered site where content only appears after JavaScript runs; we explain that problem in why your website isn't ranking on Google.

Security and maintenance

WordPress sites need regular core, theme and plugin updates; outdated plugins are a common way sites get compromised. A statically generated Next.js site has a much smaller attack surface, because there is often no database or admin login exposed on the public site.

Editing content

WordPress has a familiar editor out of the box. With Next.js, content can live in Markdown files (simple and fast, ideal for blogs maintained by a technical team) or in a headless CMS that gives editors a friendly dashboard. Pick based on who updates the site and how often.

Custom features

If your website needs logins, dashboards, integrations, pricing calculators or a connection to your product, Next.js shines, because it is a full React framework. WordPress can do this with custom plugins, but complex features fit less naturally.

Comparison

WordPress Next.js
Best for Content-heavy sites edited daily Fast marketing sites, web apps, SaaS
Speed Depends on hosting, theme, plugins Very fast with static generation
Security Needs constant plugin updates Small attack surface
Editing Built-in editor Markdown or headless CMS
Custom features Via plugins Native (React)

Should you migrate?

Consider moving to Next.js if your WordPress site is slow, hard to secure, or needs to connect closely to your product. Content, URLs and design can usually be carried over, and keeping URLs the same protects your existing rankings.
